With all the discussions surrounding upcoming weather conditions, now is a good time to ensure your business has the correct protocols in place should it be faced with a fire.
Most of us are aware of the four steps of fire preparation being Prevention, Detection and Communication, Occupant Protection, Containment and Extinguishment) but how can we put that into practice to make sure our business is prepared.
Some ways to ensure your business, the people and assets are protected are:
- Fire detectors – make sure you have the right one based on your type of property & exposures. There are a wide variety of detectors on the market but they are not all the same.
- Engage yourself and team members in education about fire hazards / prevention and steps required in the event of a fire. If you have made significant changes to your business or it has been a while since you have run a fire drill, now is the time.
- The quicker the fire is detected and the fire brigade is contacted, the extent of the damage should be lessened. Make sure there is a plan in place.
All too often we see with claims regarding fire that could have been minimalised with the right protocols in place.
